Hello and welcome to The Stylish Habit(at)! I’m Lauren Breslin, design lover, DIYer, globetrotter and first time homeowner living in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. First, I want to tell you a little about myself and what motivates me to write this blog.
I went to Penn State University and my background is in Landscape Architecture. I know, I know- when I tell people that I am a Landscape Architect (LA), the majority of them respond with “That’s great! You can do the landscaping in my front yard”. And while, yes, I am knowledgeable in plant species and design, I did not devote 5 years of my life (the length of time needed to graduate with a Bachelor’s degree in Landscape Architecture) to be a laborer. I do, however, focus on the design of the natural and built environment. Think of it this way- while architects design the structures, landscape architects design everything around them and how they are laid out. We are the “string of pearls to their little black dress”. Without the pearls, the dress would be incomplete!
Last month I had a birthday and I turned… well let’s just breeze over that for now. For some reason, this was the first birthday that really made me pause and reflect on where I’ve come from and what I’ve done in my life thus far. Before turning 25, I lived in 3 different countries (US, Spain, and Tanzania), had a lot of exciting adventures traveling, and had an amazing first job in Washington, D.C. Since then, I feel like my life has drastically slowed down. And while I’m still overcoming huge life accomplishments (moving back home to Pittsburgh for another amazing job opportunity, earning LA license and buying a home all by myself!), I’ve made this transition of being a ‘wet-behind the ear’ young adult to being an actual grown-up! WHEN DID THAT HAPPEN!?!
And life is expensive! Turns out- when you buy a home, you don’t have that much money left over to decorate it or travel. So here I am, reaching out to what is sure to be millions of other “young grown-ups” like me and sharing advice, tips, tricks, tutorials, and inspiration to get us through this crazy transition in life and making sure we all can live in a stylish habitat.
I hope you enjoy it as much as I will! =)
